Batbatan Island home to
2,300 Batbatanons, it is one of the three island barangays
(villages) of
the municipality of Culasi and is the second most populous village of
the municipality next only to the downtown village of Poblacion.
The island villagers earn their living mainly through fishing
with their catch
sun-dried and sold to the mainland market or other provinces. The main ethnic
group that lives in the island are Tangays or Cuyonon who speak a language
different from that of the people in the mainland. They also
have their own set of beliefs and unique religious rituals although
they are predominantly Christian by religion. Their belief to
the existence of supernaturals and unseen beings have somehow
helped preserved their environment including wild animals that live
there. The island has a shoreline of 10 kilometers doted with
natural anchorages and white sand beaches. American
oceanographers that stayed in this island concluded that the island
belongs to the Caribbean Category.
